A HISTORY...

USS SILVERSIDES was launched on 27AUG41 and commissioned on 15DEC41. A 312-foot submarine of the Gato class, U.S.S.SILVERSIDES left for the first of fourteen war patrols on 30APR42. She was one of the top combat submarines of The Second World War. The Joint Army - Navy Assessment Commission gave U.S.S. SILVERSIDES official credit for 23 ships sunk. Post analysis has raised this number of actual ships sunk to 29. At the conclusion of the war, U.S.S. SILVERSIDES was awarded the Presidential Unit Commendation for the 4th, 5th, 7th and 10th war patrols and 12 battle stars. After 23 years as a reserve trainer in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.S. SILVERSIDES was the focus of a unique technical restoration. As a result of this restoration, U.S.S.SILVERSIDES is the only surviving American fleet submarine that has operational power plants, all four Fairbanks - Morse power plants generate electrical power to her two General Electric propulsion units. The submarine's two bronze screws, however, remain on the pier! Now a museum in Muskegon, Michigan, U.S.S.SILVERSIDES is viewed as the most completely authentic submarine to survive the era of World War Two!

Where the interviews came from...

P.W. Knutson produced a radio program called THE SILVERSIDES REPORT for over eleven years. Portions of this program were broadcast world-wide over the NAVY RADIO NEWS SERVICE. The result was a fascinating collection of oral histories and original artifacts. Although a separate entity from the Silversides Museum in Muskegon, Michigan, material and information collected by the operations of P.W. Knutson's SILVERSIDES COLLECTION project is readily made available to the present owners of the submarine. At P.W. Knutson, we appreciate your interest and E-mails as we continue to tell a small but important part of the greatest sea stories ever told...THE SILVERSIDES STORY.....P. Knutson
